12/26/2011 Community pulls together for a Good Cause.

Lake Orion Love t-shirt design

Orion Love -- it's a phrase that people born and raised in Lake Orion understand – it's about a sense of pride and community. It's also about lending a hand to people in need.

That's why a number of graduates from Lake Orion High School decided to step forward when they heard about three extraordinary children and their families (who are all from Lake Orion) in the throes of battling disease and in need of support, hope and prayer. They have pledged to raise $100,000 for them.

Max MilewskiThe first of the three children is Max Milewski. Max was born 11 weeks prematurely with Down Syndrome and cataracts, and now at only two years old, has begun a long battle with leukemia. His courageous battle can be followed on Facebook at Lets fight like Max for Max, a site his family created to bring people together to help support his fight.

Nicole BurtonNicole Burton – the second child – has been battling cancer since she was just 4 years old. Nicole was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on September 11, 2008. She endured chemotherapy and treatment at DMC: Children's Hospital of Michigan. On March 23, 2011 she 'rang the bell' at Children's stating that she was done with her treatment and in remission. On May 20th, 2011, her mom received a call that no parent ever wants to get: that her cancer had returned in a more aggressive way. She just started a new round of chemotherapy this month. To support and follow Nicole's journey, please visit The Community Supporting Nicole Burton.

The third child, Faith Aisthorpe, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at 18 months old. She has been admitted to the hospital over a dozen times for CF exacerbation, pancreas and kidney issues. She takes five oral medications and does up to 12 breathing treatments a day. She also has a permanent IV port in her chest to access for blood draws and to infuse the IV antibiotics when she is in the hospital. To join their family's fight to raise awareness and beat this awful disease, please visit Fans for Faith.

"We have a goal of raising $100,000 for these families," said Kimberly Casper, a Lake Orion Graduate and the cause's coordinator. "We are looking for companies interested in supporting this cause in any way."

"Another inspirational side to this story has been the overwhelming community outreach and the power of social media on a positive level. I like the aspect of those offering to help when there's nothing in it for them, other than the reason that it's the right thing to do. That's what this is all about."

The community effort, which Casper has tagged "Have FAITH to the MAX, just in the NIC of time" has already seen several amazing pledges to raise awareness and provide support.

A Christmas card drive and fundraiser for "Mighty Max" was started by the daughter of Lake Orion graduate, Jeni Ochoa. Kaylie Ochoa, who is currently serving in the US Army, heard about Max and was determined to brighten his spirits this Christmas. For more details on sending a card, please visit Christmas Cards for Max.

Marc D DesRosiers, another Lake Orion graduate is pledging to ride his bike more than 1,300 miles from Denver to Detroit starting October 7, 2012. He'll ride approximately 100 miles a day until he arrives in Detroit, just in time to run the Detroit Marathon on October 21, 2012. His goal is to raise money and awareness for the three families. And, others in the area are already in talks of joining him.

Lake Orion graduate Mike Saad, owner WorldLink Marketing - an online marketing agency in Cary, NC - is creating the site,www.lakeorionloves.com, which will enable people to donate money to "Have FAITH to the MAX, just in the NIC of time."

David McKnight, owner of Emerald City Designs and fellow Lake Orion grad has offered to plan a party the evening of October 2, 2012 at Genitti's Hole in the Wall in Northville in an effort to raise money.

Detroit Love Apparel, owned by Lake Orion grad Jesse Moyet, will donate 20 percent of Orion Love sales October 1-21, 2012. All apparel can be found online at www.detroitloveapparel.com.

"All monies raised will go equally toward the three Lake Orion families whose children need our help in their fight," said Casper. "Raising $100,000 over the next 10 months is a lofty goal, but is it impossible? We don't think so."

Any area companies or individuals interested in participating, donating money or offering up items for a silent auction, should visit us at www.LakeOrionLoves.com.

Please "like" and visit their very active Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/#!/lakeorionloves?sk=wall

2/14/2011 Happy Valentines Day from Detroit! What does Valentines Day mean to you?
ifitrocks.jpg
IMG_9054.JPG
The year-round favorite "Heart Love". Perfect for today!

Happy Valentines Day everybody!

Hope you are near your loved ones tonight for a great dinner and time well spent!  While we're not sure how true the story is we think it sounds kinda fun.... Enjoy!

Below is the history and meaning of Valentines Day according to http://www.romanceclass.com/miscr/vday/history.asp

As with many holidays, the celebration of St. Valentine's Day became a mixture of the new Christian rites as well as the older pagan rites of that same time of year. St. Valentine's Day happened to fall on the Roman festival of Lupercalia. This festival was held each February to protect the villages from wolves, who would at this point be starving and cold and begin to make their village raids.

During the festival of Lupercalia, young men would playfully whip women with stripes of animal hide, chasing them around town. It was felt that this festival made the women who were 'whipped' more fertile. The young men would sometimes draw the names of girls from a jar, to choose their partner for the day for any singing and dancing.

2/7/2011 Detroit Love Apparel inspired by the Chrysler Super Bowl Ad "Imported from Detroit".
ifitrocks.jpg
oemported.jpg

As we watched Super Bowl XLV along with the rest of the planet, we saw the inspiring Chrysler Ad featuring the new 200, Detroit area scenery and a guest spot by Detroits own Eminem. Needless to say it gave us the chills and made the hairs on the back of our necks stand up. This was a truly positive and motivational commercial aimed directly at the viewers and Detroiters like us whether here in the metro area or those transplanted to other parts of the world. A great move by Chrylser and a well deserved positive view of our great city.

A very catchy slogan at the end of that commercial "Imported from Detroit" became an instant classic and brilliant by those who introduced the idea. We decided to "mock-up" our own original design inspired from the ad that we had planned on printing onto our apparel until we found out that the slogan was copyright protected. We posted the design on our Facebook page and it created massive interest. Many of our fans as well as local media outlets are interested in our design and are ready to order unfortunatley, we may not be able to create the logo exactly as is... We are looking to connect with those in charge in order to bring you what we feel is a great and positive movement for our city of Detroit.

In the end, all of our goals are the same. From our point of view those goals include further positive portrayals of Detroit in every form imaginable because the more "better" that is shown the more "better" change will follow...

We are doing our part, are you?

On the afternoon of 1/3/2011 the Parker family's home in Pontiac, MI was tragically lost to a house fire. Fortunately, everyone was safe but the loss of their pet cat and personal belongings was a nightmare start to the new year.

While going through such a horrific experience, it's events like these that seem to bring out the best in humanity. "The entire situation has been very hard losing everything, but at the same time almost a blessing in disguise," says a family spokesman "with the donations and everybody's help we can get the kids in a safer neighborhood and better schools."

We are glad to help the Parker family out with some new Detroit Love Apparel and we wish you the best for 2011, it's all uphill from here!

If you would like to donate to the Parker family and the rebuilding of their lives please send to the following address:

Terri Parker
51040 Fairlane Dr.
Shelby Township, MI 48316

A few needed items: clothing, furniture, books... Best of luck to the Parker family!
